When you click "Find" (or tap the . [period] key) on the main screen, this dialog is presented.
You can go to a bird by typing a fragment of its common (English) name, or by typing fragment(s) of its scientific (Latin) name.
Note that the / designates a search argument as Latin, and in that case a space designates, or separates, the species name from the genus name.
For an English search example, an argument of adee will take you to the Kiskadee. Clicking "Next" (or tapping the , [comma] key) will take you to the next instance of adee in the list, which is the first Chickadee.
In the Latin search example above, both genus and species name fragments have been entered. The argument will take the user to Passer domestica, the beloved House Sparrow.
Thus with one Find facility you can get to birds with just meaningful fragments of their English names or their Latin genus, Latin species, or a combinatiuon of Latin genus and species names.
For even more ways to get to birds (the most important facilities in birding software) see Hot Keys and Jump Tables.
