Fixes a problem with subspecies recording when changing the comment in the confirmation dialog. (DUUH!)

Fixes a problem with subspecies recording when editing an existing record.

Version 4.58 and later includes support for the over 11,000 subspecies in the Clements 2001 World Checklist. This new function provides a dialog which lists all the subspecies for the currently selected species. You can select a subspecies during sighting entry and have it posted in the comment. Later, you can run sighting record listings with the subspecies name as a criterion. This is not just a way to store interesting or scientifically important data -- this is also the perfect way to "escrow" subspecies information in anticipation of future splits.
Special "SS" buttons at various places in the program supply access to this feature:
* An SS button at the bottom of the main screen, next to
the Latin name, pops up the subspecies dialog showing all the
subspecies for the currently highlighted species.
* An SS button on the Comment dialog during sighting entry pops
up the subspecies dialog showing all the subspecies for the species
being recorded. When a subspecies is selected (double-clicked;
or highlighted and OK'd) the subspecies name is entered into the
sighting record comment.
* An SS button on the Sighting Record Listing Criteria dialog
pops up the subspecies dialog if a species criterion has been
entered. The selected subspecies name is then inserted as the
Key Word criterion. Only records of that subspecies will then
be listed.
* During Field Note editing, an SS button pops up the dialog for
the species of the record the Field Note is attached to. The selected
subspecies is inserted in the field note at the current cursor
position.
Subspecies support is best used in conjunction with Clements' Birds of the World - A Checklist which includes not only the subspecies but the ranges for each of the subspecies. The book, a monumental work, the official world checklist of the American Birding Association, and an imperative for any serious world birder, is available from us for $39.95 plus $6.00 S&H. Call 1-800-354-7755 or return to the main page of this site to order it.

This minor update to 4.57d provides the following:
Support for the Clements 2001 taxonomy and the Shawneen Finnegan Nation Checklist Add-On 2001 taxonomy. Simultaneously supports the new and old taxonomies.
Side-steps a problem with Palm Support when the third-party Palm utility "Backup Buddy," at its most recent version, tries to delete Palm Support files.

In some releases, if a Field Note was attached to a Place in the first column the Places table, the indicative ! character was missing.
In some releases the Places Show dialog was positioned poorly.

No longer inserts an unnecessary space in an initial empty comment in a Palm checklist..
Successfully senses that no default Windows printer is installed on the computer, and provides a helpful message, instead of giving an error message.
Fixes a problem where, in a "Seasonal" report or listing, if the ending year was not a leap year, and the ending date of the season was February 28, if the series of years selected included a leap year, records recorded on February 29 of that year were ignored. A side effect of this fix is that for seasonal reports with an ending date of 2/28/xx, records for 2/29/yy (leap years) will be included in spite of the defined season -- in other words, you can't define a season ending 2/28; by default it will actually end 2/29 even though you enter 2/28 in the criteria.

The "b" version is identified only by the entry in Help | About AviSys. In all other places is it called simply Version 4.57.
AviSys Partners: Version 4.57b includes support for the new AviSys Partners add-on which provides comparative and summary reports for two separate birders who keep their sighting data in separate data sets, in separate instances of AviSys, or even on different computers. Click Here for details and to download Partners free of charge. Another AviSys Exclusive!
A New Option, Start Journal at Last Record: many users, when they consult the Journal while entering data from a trip, would like the Journal to open with the last record entered displayed and highlighted. There is now an Options menu item to assert that behavior.
New computers are so fast that you didn't have a chance to hit the Emergency button if you need it, or to double-click the eagle image to see the easter egg. So we added a 2 second delay right after the Master Checklist load to give you a chance. Sorry for the delay. . .

Other problems resolved:
(As of this date, there are no outstanding reported problems.)
The "a" version is identified only by the entry in Help | About AviSys. In all other places is it called simply Version 4.57.
Expanded Key Word Function: Version 4.57a and later provide in the Key Word List (the list available from the table, but not the table itself) Key Word entries up to 40 characters in length. The Report and Listing Criteria dialogs also accommodate 40 character-wide Key Words when they are sourced from the Key Word List. This enhancement is provided for those users who frequently need to insert the same long words or phrases in comments and/or to search for them. Particularly, those users who frequently record the same sub-species names will like this feature. The 40 character width allows storing any sub-species name in the form G. s. sssssssssssssssssss, or in any form you wish within the 40 character limit. The list is maintained in alphabetic sequence; therefore you may prefer to use the entire generic name, or a leading fragment of it, for clarity, as long as the 40 character limit is not exceeded. (Very few of the sub-specific names exceed 18 characters -- users have been using the 18 character Key Word List for this purpose for years). The capacity of the list is in excess of 20,000 entries. (Load/sort time of the list becomes noticeable, and requires a bit of patience, beyond 5,000 entries.) Report and Listing criteria can be loaded directly from the list. If the Key Word entry is longer than the display area in the criteria dialog, just rest the mouse pointer over the entry and it will be displayed in its entirety.

"Birds of the World" fix: If you use the Birds of North America CD-ROM support, and also have the Birds of the World facility, if you selected a non-North America bird, and clicked on the BNA button, you would not be taken to the BNA dialog where you could select Birds of the World -- because BNA is not active for non-N.A. birds. In Version 4.57a, if you have BOW installed, you will be taken directly to it. (BOW is used by very, very few people.)

Fixes a problem where endemic markers were not included in a checklist printed to text file.
In some installations, the Ctrl-R Hot Key was not going to N.A. Sparrows.
(As of this date, there are no outstanding reported problems.)
Version 4.56 has code which handles taxonomy and format changes in Clements' Fifth Edition and the latest version of the Shawneen Finnegan Nation Checklist Add-On published on January 12, 2000 and later. It will also identify and continue to properly handle the older nation checklist version.
This version supports the Windows Large Fonts setting. This function does not re-size windows -- rather, with Large Fonts selected, it reduces the font size in AviSys windows so that text in controls formats properly and no horizontal scrolling of the Places Tables is required. Windows Large Fonts is non-standard, and we still recommend against it if at all possible in your environment. A lower resolution (such as moving from 1024x768 to 800x600) at the standard Windows Small Fonts is the best solution except for users of intensive graphics applications.
The following was slip-streamed into the 4.56 release as of 6/12/00. This release is identified only by the notation, in Help|About, of Version 4.56b, and an EXE file date of 6/01/2000.
*** Adds a feature: Report Legends
The Print Options dialog has been enhanced to provide for a 48 character legend to be printed at the bottom of reports and listings. By clicking the Legend button, you are presented an edit in which you type the legend you wish. If the Legend box is checked, the legend will be printed at the bottom of each page of the report. (Note: if the report is an invoked Checklist, the legend will be truncated to 24 characters because of reduced available space.)

*** Corrects a problem where . . .
1. you ran a columnar report (Species Seen, Species Not Seen,
Checklist)
2. with Latin names printed
3. with some print drivers
4. the last line was the second line of a species name, the second
line of a family name, or the third line of a family name where
the English name had been split into two lines
. . . the final line (lower right) on some pages could overprint the footer separator line.
Corrects a problem where some keyword report and listing criteria were not being handled properly when the criteria had trailing spaces.
The following was slip-streamed into the 4.56c release as of 7/24/2000. This release is identified only by the notation, in Help|About, of Version 4.56c, and an EXE file date of 7/24/2000:
Changes were made to a few Nation assignments (links) to AviSys
Continents (ABA Regions), reflecting changes in Region boundaries
announced in the 1999 Big Day and List Report published
by the American Birding Association in the Spring of 2000.
You will need to re-link the affected nations, following the instructions
in REGIONS.WRI which will be automatically opened for you the
first time you start AviSys after the update. (Future additions
of Nations to the Places tables will be automatically linked to
the proper Continents.)
(As of this date, there are no outstanding reported problems.)
When in the Places Tables, if a Place is highlighted, the complete linkage for that Place is now displayed in the Window title bar. If a Place level is skipped in the linkage, [] is inserted as a notation.
Version 4.55 is a consolidation of several changes in 4.54, many of which had been "slip-streamed" into that release on different dates.
(As of this date, there are no currently outstanding reported problems.)
Support for the Birds of North America CD-ROM.
Version 4.54 will backup .CLB files, which prior versions don't.
The following was "slipstreamed" into this release on 10/31/99:
A green LED reminder is turned on on the main screen when Sighting Record Streaming is active.
A new item is on the Sighting Record Streaming menu: "View Current Memory Stream", allowing you to view (but not edit) the current data stream in memory.
Fixes to inscrutable design nuances . . .
Fixes a problem where a Certify Data Set warning message is issued multiple times in some circumstances when invalid records are found.
Fixes a problem where, when installed on a network, an invalid data set path reported from Windows NT can invoke a message dialog that is not initialized, causing a GPF. (We do not formally support network installations, but have no other reported problems from networks.)
Fixes a problem where, if a species has been added to the master list, the world bandcode file for that species is not updated until after AviSys has been closed, reopened, and the update function run.
The following was "slipstreamed" into this release on 11/21/99:
Fixes a problem where, in some environments, if there are many "accidentals" in a Species Seen report, and they pass over a page boundary, the following page is not printed.
Fixes a problem where, in some environments, if a Checklist is invoked in a Species Seen criteria dialog, and is then uninvoked by selecting Checklist and clicking Quit at the Checklist dialog, a GPF occurs.
(As of this date, there are no currently outstanding reported problems.)
Full support for Nunavut -- the new Canada Territory.
Support to accommodate the latest Shawneen Finnegan Nation Checklist Add-On (7/15/99) while still maintaining support for the prior version.
The reminder that "Backing Up is Easy..." when you exit AviSys now appears only if you have added, edited, or deleted sighting records and have not backed up. You are reminded to back up when changing data sets, and the Journal reminder is handled properly when you change data sets.

Fixes a problem . . .
Fixes some minor irritations.
(As of this release, there were no currently outstanding reported problems.)
A new Option provides startup in Checklist Display Mode with a given checklist invoked (for example, always start with your state checklist invoked and in Checklist Mode where only the species in your state's checklist are displayed on screen).
New Backup and Restore facility for custom checklists (those you marked yourself).
New Import of Species Seen report file or external text file to a custom checklist.
The logic when switching between the State Checklist and Nation Checklist dialogs is improved. There is now a Nations button in the State dialog, and a States button in the Nations dialog. (for Nation Checklist Add-On users)
Improved wording and timing of messages when creating, invoking and marking checklists.
Improved handling of endemics with Nation Checklist Add-On.
When Certify Data Set Quality selected, warning message issued only if actual errors found.
World Band Codes are now usable with Butterfly, Dragonfly and Herps data sets (Switch to World Mode). Fixes error messages with World Band Code creation with non-bird data sets with unusual punctuation.

Fixes a problem with some NT systems when creating a new data set.
Fixes some incorrect World Band Codes in some copies of 4.51.
Fixes a problem of temporarily losing sighting markers if an attempt is made to delete a Place when editing the Place in an existing record.
Fixes a problem with an export operation not canceling when cancel selected.
Fixes a problem with the main list switching to World Mode if the scroll bar thumb is clicked after a record deletion or edit from a Sighting File Listing or Journal while in N.A. Mode.
Fixes a list display problem when updating state checklist status.
Fixes intermittent problems some users experienced with mass edit.

Automatic Master Checklist Update (from update file)
Renumber Master Checklist.
Fixes to inscrutable design nuances . . .
In the High Speed Report Viewer, when a State Checklist Summary report was followed by a State Summary report, artifacts from the first report were visible immediately after the data from the second report. (The data was OK.)
A GPF occurred if you performed the following in the exact sequence shown:
Band Code rnph - Ring-necked Pheasant, Red-necked Phalarope collision pair added to BANDSEL.AVI.
Other minor or unusual items were corrected or improved.
Prior to Version 4.09, when exporting records to an ASCII (text) comma delimited file, if expanded Places and expanded Attributes were selected, the Attributes of some records could be truncated.
The Band Code search facility (one of the really neat ways to get to birds in AviSys) has been significantly enhanced. Prior to this release, about 11% of the species caused a band code "collision" if the normal scheme was used to derive the band code. For instance, the following species . . .
. . . all result in a band code of CAWR. The Bird Banding Laboratory created special band codes to handle these "collisions," and you used those special codes in AviSys to get to the bird. If you used the normal code, CAWR, the band code search failed, and you then used one of the other methods, such as the Jump Tables, Hot Keys, or Find.
With this update, if you enter the normal code for a "collision group," the entire group of species is presented in a dialog box, and you can choose the species you want. The first species in the list is always the most frequently used species for N.A. birders, so another "Enter" is usually all that's required. You will never again get a band code failure when entering a proper, normally derived, code, and you don't have to worry about the special codes.
Additionally, depending on the environment, when the Comment dialog was presented, a timing condition caused the mouse pointer to move to the "Ditto" button instead of the "OK" button. This annoyance has been fixed in 4.08.
Record Listing and Report Criteria Labels Now Hot
In the criteria dialogs for listing records and running reports, we placed the criteria selections, such as date range and Place, in white-background labels for visibility. Since users are accustomed to being able to click in white-background areas and "edit" the contents, occasionally users would be surprised that nothing happened when they did so, until they discovered that they needed to click the adjacent buttons.
We have now made the labels "hot" -- that is, if you click the label, it is the same as clicking the button, and the appropriate criteria dialog pops up. Further, if a date range has already been entered, if you click in either of the date labels, only the appropriate "from" or "to" date dialog will pop up. This allows you to change only one of the dates instead of having to go through both dates as when you click the button.
Depending on when you received AviSys 4.x, you may already have some, or many, of these enhancements, or you may have them but they are not covered in your manual (covered in UPDATE.WRI).
In addition, a few minor problems have been fixed, and there have been many minor refinements in the user interface.
